The promise of earning profits while not doing much of anything draws a lot of people to affiliate marketing.  But does affiliate marketing really work this way?

As an affiliate, all you are required to do is paste a simple ad on you website.  Then all you have to do is sit back and wait for the money to start rolling in.  Easy, right?  Well, it’s pretty rare for it to actually happen like that.  Many affiliates earn almost nothing from their affiliate programs simply because they do nothing.  Remember that affiliate marketing just that, marketing, and you’ll definitely need to market your merchant’s product if you expect to earn anything.

If you want to become a successful affiliate marketer who sees substantial affiliate pay checks then you are going to have to an active participant.  Why?  Because there is no money in simply sitting and waiting.  If you want to be successful, and by that I mean make a living, and if you want to continually grow your affiliate checks, you’ve got to do something.  Think of ways that you can promote your merchant’s business and products better.  Think of ways that you can entice other people to click on the link or the ad your merchant has provided. Think about what it would take for you to actually click on the link and commit to a purchase!

So, if you this is your first foray into affiliate marketing and someone gave you the impression that all you need to start a blog or website then I am sorry.  What I what is for you to actually make a good living and that is going to require time, effort and training.  I want to see you take the steps to make your affiliate program work better and gain more commissions for you.  How?  Here are a few guidelines that should help you to continually grow your affiliate pay checks:

* Become the ‘GO TO’ guy on your affiliate product.

Take the time to learn everything you can about your merchants product.  To become an expert, the best thing you can do is purchase your merchant’s product yourself.  First hand experience is always the best way to learn and that means actually using the product.  Testimonials are one of the best marketing methods around and you can do them in written format, then create an audio for distribution using the same script do a video for youtube.  Now if there is truly some reason you are not able to purchase the product, you can at least do a thorough job of researching the product.

* Host your own website.

I suggest coming up with a domain name that is short and easy to remember as it will become part of your personal ‘brand’ or your online identity. For my affiliate training page (where you found this post) I chose my name, www.john-roche.com. Try to avoid long names or random character names that people will have to create a bookmark so they don’t have to remember it.  After all the idea of a website is to create a digital store front and if people have trouble remember your address they will quickly find another store to buy from.  That means less traffic for your page, fewer chances for your affiliate ads and links to be clicked, AND LESS INCOME!

Another good idea is to create a private (members only) website and offer access to it to only to those who clicks on your affiliate ads. Anytime exclusive private access is offered people perk up, we all like the idea of being invited to be part of a select group.  Private websites also gives you a venue to promote your back-end affiliate products. These are items related to the original affiliate product but maybe a little more expensive. After all if you join the country club you expect the Pro-shop to have better products and higher prices.

* Write your own affiliate ads.

Most merchants do mind if you write and design your own ads for their products, that said it’s still a good idea to sent request permission and send a link to the ad before posting it on your site.  Using your own words and adding your person touches will give you greater advantage over a lot of other affiliates who rely on the same old landing page and sales pages as every other affiliate.

* Participate in chat rooms, discussion boards, and forums related to your product.

Most people don’t realize that participating in discussion boards and and chat rooms is the equivalent of sitting in Star Bucks with a group of friends discussion products. Just like Star Bucks there are always people around you listening to what you’re saying and deciding whether try what your talking about or not. Make a link to your affiliate page part of your signature so people who read your AMAZINGLY KNOWLEDGEABLE COMMENTS can go straight to the affiliate page!! Smart, huh! You might even start your own chat room, after all you have a website and your CPanel should have the auto-script to create it, then start populating it.  You don’t have to promote your affiliate product at once, but look for chances to mention, advertise and promote it as you go along.

* Create a free ezine or newsletter.

Ezines and newsletters are periodical publications that aim to provide information to people who are interested in a specific niche, your specific niche.  Now don’t get the idea that you have to promote your affiliate product in every newsletter or email. That can become very annoying.  Sometimes the best thing you can do is not mention your product but place a simple text link at the end of your newsletter. No fanfare, now drum roll, just a simple link.  I know this may give some of you seizures but sometimes silence is the most powerful message. Oh, don’t forget to promote your ezine or newsletter on your website. Add a popup or simple optin box that people can give you their email address in exchange for access to your deeply insightful newsletter.

These are but a just a few simple guidelines on how you can increase your affiliate sales and continually grow your affiliate checks.  There are a lot of other tips and tricks that will help but hey, if I gave them all here what would I write about next time?

What’s important is that you be able to find a way to: attract more traffic to your site, induce your visitors to click on the ads on your site, and be able to promote your merchant’s products even outside the boundary of your website.  If you can do that, there’s no reason for you not to become a successful affiliate marketer.

May the Lord bless you and your house hold.
